Solvayovy lomy

Svatý Jan pod Skalou, Středočeský kraj

These former limestone quarries near Svatý Jan pod Skalou are now a museum of limestone quarrying and the narrow-gauge railways that carried the stone. The Belgian firm Solvay opened the quarries, and extraction began in June 1918, supplying limestone to its soda works at Neštěmice. The site is open from spring to autumn and can also be reached on foot from Loděnice or Bubovice.
