Schloss Waldeck

Waldeck, Hessen

Perched on a steep, wooded rock above the northeastern shore of the Edersee, this castle sits at the edge of Waldeck. First recorded in 1120, it was the residence of the Counts of Waldeck for centuries and was gradually rebuilt into a palace-like complex. It later served as a fortress, barracks and, from 1734 to 1868, a prison. A road climbs up from the town centre, and the Kellerwald-Edersee nature park surrounds it.
