Schloss Artstetten
Artstetten-Pöbring, Niederösterreich
This Renaissance castle on the edge of the Wachau valley was long a Habsburg property and still belongs to the Hohenberg family. A museum here tells the story of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who owned the castle from 1889 and had it extensively renovated. The parish church stands within the grounds, and the castle crypt holds the graves of Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, assassinated in 1914. Because their marriage was deemed unequal, they could not be buried in the imperial crypt in Vienna.
