Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden

Berchtesgaden, Bayern

The Berchtesgaden salt mine is the oldest working salt mine in Germany, where salt is mostly extracted by wet mining. As a show mine it takes visitors into the mountain by mine train along a route about 1,400 metres long. Salt mining shaped the economy of the local monastery territory from the Middle Ages. It is one of the main attractions of the Berchtesgaden area.
