Römergrab Köln-Weiden

Köln, Nordrhein-Westfalen

Beneath Aachener Straße lies a Roman burial chamber from the 2nd century, where several generations of a wealthy family were laid to rest. It belonged to a country villa on the long road from Tongeren to Cologne, about nine kilometres before the Roman city's western gate. It was found in 1843 during digging for an outbuilding, when a staircase led more than five metres down to a stone sealing slab.
