Rammelsberg

Goslar, Niedersachsen

For more than a thousand years, ore was dug out of the Rammelsberg above Goslar, until the last shift in 1988. Today you can go underground in the visitor mine to see how silver, copper and lead were won from the rock over the centuries. The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992 and lies just south of the old town, on the northern edge of the Harz. Legend has it that a horse, pawing the ground in 968, uncovered the first ore here.
