Museum Carantana
Spittal an der Drau, Kärnten
In the village of Molzbichl near Spittal an der Drau, this museum shows what archaeologists have dug up around the parish church: finds from the early Middle Ages. They include remains from the foundations of a monastery, probably established in the late 8th century to convert the Slavic population of Carantania. The name echoes Carinthia's designation as Provincia Carantana in a charter of Charlemagne. The museum was rebuilt and reopened in 2015, and in the church next door the gravestone inscription of the deacon Nonnosus, dated 532, is set into the altar.
