Landesmuseum Mainz

Housed in the former electoral stables, this museum of art and history runs from prehistory through Roman times and the Middle Ages to the Baroque, Art Nouveau and 20th-century art. Finds from around Mainz include a Stone Age Venus figure, Roman memorial stones and a 1st-century Jupiter Column. Medieval highlights include an ivory Madonna and a cycle of Mary paintings by the Master of the Housebook. The painting collection began with a gift from Napoleon in 1803.
