Dom- und Diözesanmuseum (Mainz)

Mainz, Rheinland-Pfalz

Art spanning two thousand years, once part of Mainz Cathedral and the churches of the diocese, is shown in historic rooms: Hohenstaufen-era vaulted halls, a late Gothic cloister and former chapter houses. Six metres below today's ground level are Roman and early medieval finds, including pagan votive altars and the Carolingian Priesterstein of around 800. The chapter houses lead on to the cathedral treasury in the late Gothic St Nicholas chapel.
