International contemporary art is the focus here, at two sites: the MuseumsQuartier and Karlsplatz. There is no permanent collection, only changing solo and themed exhibitions. The Karlsplatz venue began in 1992 as a temporary container-shaped building by Adolf Krischanitz, which caused fierce public debate at the time.
