Grube Gustav

Meißner, Hessen

This show mine takes you underground into an old copper-shale working near Abterode. Miners went looking for silver and gold but found copper shale, which was extracted from 1497 until the middle of the 19th century. The galleries, several hundred metres long, were cut into the hill entirely by hand with hammer and pick. Today the mine is open to visitors.
