Gleimhaus

Halberstadt, Sachsen-Anhalt

The poet and collector Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim lived in this half-timbered house in the 18th century, and his estate still forms the core of the collections. It stands just behind the choir of Halberstadt's Gothic cathedral. A literary museum has been here since 1862, making it one of the oldest in Germany. It tells the story of Gleim, a patron and friend to many writers, and of the Age of Enlightenment.
