Fossilienwelt Weinviertel

Stetten, Niederösterreich

Near Stetten lies the largest fossil oyster reef on Earth that visitors can actually get to. It is about 17 million years old, from a time when a shallow tropical sea reached into the Korneuburg Basin. Tectonic movement has since tilted the reef by around 24 degrees. The museum explains how the fossils at the Teiritzberg were found and studied.
