Burg Forchtenstein

Forchtenstein, Burgenland

Forchtenstein is a late medieval castle above the Wulka valley, southwest of Mattersburg. Its oldest part, with a 50-metre keep, dates from the early 14th century, and from 1622 the Esterházy family turned it into a fortress. In the Black Tower you can see a deep pit once used as a cell for the condemned.
