Bergbau-Technik-Park

Großpösna, Sachsen

On 5.4 hectares in the Leipzig lakes region, this open-air museum shows how a lignite opencast mine works. The tour follows the whole cycle, from clearing settlements and lowering the groundwater to moving overburden, extracting coal and restoring the land. Two giant machines from the former Espenhain mine are the centrepiece, among them bucket-wheel excavator 1547, which weighs 1,300 tonnes.
