Basaltpark Bad Marienberg

Bad Marienberg, Rheinland-Pfalz

A signposted circular trail leads around a restored quarry in this open-air museum. It explains the volcanic activity that shaped the region some 25 million years ago and the history of basalt quarrying. You can still see the different crystal forms of the rock, notably the five- or six-sided columns, often standing in a radiating pile.
