The museum occupies a building conceived as a monument to Mieszko I and Bolesław the Brave, sharing a complex with an auditorium and a school. It tells of the beginnings of the Polish state and its first capital, with many exhibits coming from excavations in Gniezno since 1948. The permanent exhibition here has been open since 1983.
