Vineum Bodensee

Meersburg, Baden-Württemberg

Wine has a long history in Meersburg and around Lake Constance, and this museum tells it. It occupies a former Holy Spirit hospital in the upper town, where Franz Anton Mesmer died in 1815. The entrance hall is dominated by the Heiliggeist wine press of 1607, which was in use until 1922 and could crush up to 4,000 kilograms of grapes in 24 hours. A film projected onto it shows how it works, and in a separate film room local winemakers talk about the moment grape juice turns into wine.
