Schloss Hartheim

Alkoven, Oberösterreich

This Renaissance castle in the Eferding Basin, a few kilometres south of the Danube, is a notable building of its period. Between 1940 and 1944 it served as a Nazi killing centre where disabled and mentally ill people, concentration camp prisoners and foreign civilian workers were murdered. Since 2003 it has been a place of learning and remembrance.
