Sandsteinmuseum Bad Bentheim

Bad Bentheim, Niedersachsen

In the castle park below Burg Bentheim, this museum is devoted to Bentheim sandstone, which was quarried around the town for centuries and sold far afield. The permanent exhibition, on 180 square metres, covers the stone's geology and the history of its quarrying and use. It is housed in a historic timber-framed house with a modern extension. Beside the castle stands the Kuhlkerl, a sculpture honouring the quarry workers.
