Rotes Haus

Monschau, Nordrhein-Westfalen

This grand patrician house of the Scheibler cloth-manufacturing family beside the Rur shows how well-off townspeople lived around 1800. Built probably between 1752 and 1768, it takes its name from its red façade. The left half, Zum goldenen Helm, was the family home; the right half, Zum Pelikan, served as counting house and workplace. Beside the low half-timbered houses around it, the three-storey building still looks imposing.
