Museum für mittelalterlichen Bergbau im Erzgebirge

Dippoldiswalde, Sachsen

Beneath Dippoldiswalde run tunnels where silver was mined in the Middle Ages. Inside the castle, the museum shows archaeological finds from these old workings, which were in use from about 1185 to 1260, across some 300 square metres. The mines had been forgotten until the 2002 floods made the ground collapse. The exhibition tells how they were rediscovered and studied.
