Königsbrunn, Bayern

A giant globe built from historical maps stands in the middle of Königsbrunn, said to be the largest of its kind. It commemorates the trade links between Swabia and Franconia and India, and its name nods both to the Latin word for merchant and to the mapmaker Gerhard Mercator. Inside, an exhibition traces how long-distance trade between India and the western world began and flourished in the 16th century. The globe sits on a purpose-built square between the grammar school and the former leisure pool.
