Beneath Nuremberg Castle runs a network of tunnels cut into the sandstone in the Middle Ages. The cellar at Obere Schmiedgasse 52 was converted in 1940 to shelter the city's artworks from air raids. The art bunker is one stop on the Nuremberg Historic Mile.
