Gedenkstätte Heldenberg

Heldenberg, Niederösterreich

In the castle park at Kleinwetzdorf, 169 statues and zinc busts of rulers, generals and soldiers stand in the open air, from Rudolf I to Emperor Franz Joseph. The army supplier Joseph Pargfrieder had them set up in 1849, modelled on the Walhalla. A crypt beneath an obelisk holds Field Marshal Radetzky, Field Marshal Wimpffen and Pargfrieder himself. The grounds also include quarters built for military invalids.
