The memorial occupies the former special prison Bautzen II, nicknamed the Stasi jail, and remembers the victims of Bautzen's two prisons. The building held political prisoners in East German times and closed in 1992. Today it serves as a place of remembrance, a museum and a meeting place, created thanks to former inmates.
