Festung Dömitz
Dömitz, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Beside the Elbe in Dömitz stands the largest fortress in Mecklenburg, laid out by the Italian Francesco a Bornau and built between 1559 and 1565. It can now be visited as a museum. Above the main gate are the coats of arms of Duke John Albert I and his wife. Within the museum building, the lower parts of a palace and a tower from the 13th-century castle that stood here before are still preserved.
