Benediktinerkloster Altenburg, Österreich

Altenburg, Niederösterreich

Altenburg Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in the Waldviertel north of Krems, is a large complex that took on its baroque form in the 18th century. The architect was Joseph Munggenast, with frescoes by Paul Troger and stucco by Franz Josef Holzinger. Founded in 1144, it survived destruction by the Swedes and restrictions under Joseph II, and the whole complex is a protected monument.
