Aktives museum Südwestfalen

Siegen, Nordrhein-Westfalen

This museum looks at what the Nazi era meant in the Siegerland, through the stories of people from the Siegen-Wittgenstein district: those who were persecuted and murdered, and the townspeople whose actions made the persecution possible. It occupies an air-raid bunker built in 1940 on the foundations of the synagogue that was burned down in November 1938. That synagogue, opened in 1904, had served the Jewish community for over three decades as a place of worship and gathering. The site works as a place of learning and documentation.
