This is a good place to start if you want to understand how Hanover and Lower Saxony came to be. The collection follows the story of the city, the House of Guelph and the former Guelph territories. The museum stands on Pferdestraße in a building designed by Dieter Oesterlen and opened in 1966, after its predecessor was destroyed in the Second World War. Its permanent exhibition was redesigned in 2017.
