The museum is best known for its ancient Egyptian collection of about 9,000 objects spanning more than 5,000 years, from prehistory to Roman and Christian times. It also holds ancient Peruvian art, the second-largest collection of Chinese porcelain in Europe, and a natural history collection of over 300,000 items. The current building dates from 2000.
