Since 1994 the museum has occupied the listed former imperial main post office on Synagogenplatz in the city centre. It shows art of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. It grew out of the collection of the Mülheim patron Robert Rheinen and is one of the RuhrKunstMuseen.
