Muzeum Więzienia „Pawiak”

Śródmieście, mazowieckie

The museum stands on the surviving underground foundations of the cells of Pawiak prison, which the Germans blew up in August 1944. Reconstructed cells rise from original walls 1.1 to 1.5 metres high, and inside you see bars, hinges and locks recovered from the rubble, along with documents and items prisoners used. The grounds hold several memorials, including a bronze copy of an elm on which victims' families have hung epitaph plaques since 1945. The story told here is that of the prison under German occupation, 1939–1944.
