Nickelmuseum in der Hopfriesen, ehem. Schmelzofen

At the head of the Obertal valley, deep in the Schladminger Tauern, stands a historic smelting furnace, the only one preserved in the eastern Alps. Plain new architecture wraps around the weathered old walls, and contemporary art hints at what the furnace once did. The museum tells of mining and raw-material extraction in these mountains. Hiking routes such as the Schmelzofenrunde and the Knappenweg pass by it.
