The memorial stands on the former prisoner compound of the Dachau concentration camp and recalls the crimes of the Nazi regime. Part of the exhibition and the archive are housed in the camp's surviving former service building. The main entrance is at the visitor centre on Pater-Roth-Straße. The memorial has been open since 1965 and draws visitors from around the world.
