Hidden beneath the vineyards of the Ahr valley is a vast nuclear shelter from the Cold War, once a state secret, built to keep the government working in a crisis. Of the 17.3-kilometre complex, 203 metres can now be visited. A guided tour of about 90 minutes covers nuclear armament, spies, secret NATO plans and scenarios for a third world war.
