At Maissau, a purpose-built show tunnel leads to an amethyst vein lying over Europe's largest amethyst deposit, described as the largest accessible vein in the world. Amethyst World has two exhibition buildings on gemstones and a themed leisure park with indoor and outdoor activities for families. The vein was found by chance in 1845 during quarry work.
